Have you ever wondered why….

The Easter bunny bring us decorated eggs ?

The Anglo-Saxons worshipped a Goddess known as Eostre (originating from Babylonian times) who was playful and signified fertility and rebirth.  Her reign over the earth began at the Vernal Equinox marking the first day of Spring.  Legend has it that Eostre found a wounded bird and transformed it into a hare, so that it could survive the Winter. The hare found it could lay eggs, so it decorated these each Spring and left them as offering to the goddess.

How is it that the Anglo-Saxons could think this? The Lapwing bird makes nests at ground level resembling a hare’s nest (forms).  The abandoned nests were perceived to belong to hares and people believed the orphaned eggs were of the hare. This gave them the belief that hares could lay eggs during springtime.

The Christian religion adapted the celebration of Eostre and eggs became to signify new birth, the outer shell demonstrating that of the tomb of Christ and the chick signifying new life.

Mother’s day is dedicated to saying thank you and what better place to express your gratitude than at The Crown

Pancake Day

Filed Under - Events, Food Events

Come along and indulge in sweet and savoury delights at The Crown on 21st February. We will be cooking pancakes galore to mark the start of the 47 days countdown to Easter.

So if you are in and around Standish and fancy a crepe take a trip to the The Crown on Pancake Day.

Tickle those taste buds and confess to all how tantalizing The Crown crepes are.

Did you know?

That in Newfoundland and Labrador children take delight in delving into their pancakes to find objects which are intended to predict their future.

Folklore has it that pancake races originated after a woman in Olney lost track of time one day whilst making pancakes, only when the church bells rang did she realise the time. With pan in hand she ran all the way to the Church. Now tradition throughout the UK reinacts the race to the Church as villagers run tossing their pancakes.

Over the Valentine weekend our chefs will prepare a divine 3 course meal, designed and prepared with tenderness that you and your loved one deserve.  Adorn your Valentine by cracking open a bottle of champagne and make a night of it at The Crown where the romantic ambiance can continue in one of our dedicated rooms.
