Greetings ale drinkers, News from beer heaven at The Crown at Worthington. Hope you enjoyed our Yorkshire ale festival, amazing that 37 new breweries opened in the county in the last 2 years and all producing cracking ale.

This time of year we look forward to the special winter brews that appear, from pale icy refreshing pale session beers to dark, complex, strong spiced winter warmers, all of which are featured in our Winter Ale Festival January 13th to15th.

Pale low gravity beers have a short shelf life and need to be served young and fresh, a bit like a New Zealand Sauvignon blanc. STRONG DARK BEERS HOWEVER CAN BE KEPT TO MATURE, GATHERING FLAVOUR AND STRENGTH , A BIT LIKE A GOOD RED WINE. So I have been collecting strong ales over the last year and letting them mature in the dark recesses of the cellar ready for January. The two ‘stars’ of the show are the last cask of Liverpool Organic Breweries Imperial Russian Stout 7.9% brewed with lots of mad ingredients like organic liquorice sticks, and Durham Breweries Nuptuals Old Ale 10% brewed to a tradition old English Recipe especially for the Royal wedding. Only 4 casks were produced and I got one!!. The head brewer said it would be ready in June but better still if I left it, so I did!! Don’t miss this one they are coming down from Durham to try it.

Our brewer of the month in December is Phoenix Brewery in Heywood. A great stalwart of the micro brewery scene and brewers of the famous Wobbly Bob, very popular pale ale Arizona and lots more. Every beer they brew is spot on and all Phoenix beers will be £2.59 a pint regardless of ABV.

See you soon and wherever you be drinking good ale, let me know your ale tales.

They may be a new kid on the block in terms of Real Ale but The Burscough Brewing Company Limited is certainly fast finding its feet. On the 17th April 2010 The Burscough Brewing Company Limited was born, the brain child of Andy Brocken and Mike McCombe.

The brewery is located in a cobbled courtyard to the rear of the Hop Vine pub and is housed in the old stables that played an important role in the former life of the pub when it was a busy Coaching House on the old Turnpike Road, which is now the A59. This derelict buildings brought back to life and refurbished to accommodate a modern micro-brewery.

Their 4bbl brewing plant started life back in October 2006 at Black Mountain Brewery, Llangadog, South Wales and was used until spring 2009 when, after the brewery closed, it was sold to Oban Ales, Kilmelford, Scotland. Oban Ales commenced brewing in February 2010 but due to a number of difficulties decided to cease brewing and sell the plant in September 2010 and hey presto the well travelled plant became the backbone of the new Burscough Brewery.

The brewery produce a number of beers including – Priory Gold 3.8% ABV. A pale session beer with a distinct bitterness and hoppy citrus notes.
This name was suggested by Lynda Traynor a member of our Quaffer’s club and is named after Burscough Priory. The Augustinian priory of Burscough was founded about 1190 by Robert son of Henry, Lord of Lathom and Knowsley.

In August 1982 Tony Allen opened his Oak Brewery on an industrial estate in Ellesmere Port. Nine years later he moved to a location more central to his growing free trade and the Phoenix Brewery, based in Heywood, was born.

Today Phoenix Brewery produce around 100 barrels a week supplying 400-plus outlets with the large range of beers produced throughout the year. This comprises a core range along with many monthly specials, usually repeated on a yearly basis. Look out for the seasonal Christmas Kiss and Humbug.

Additions to the range are occasional, the latest being Spotland Gold (4.1%) a crisp hoppy beer initially brewed to mark the centenary of Rochdale FC. Indeed, clean, hoppy blond beers are something of a Phoenix characteristic. Few “brown” beers are made apart from the now-legendary Wobbly Bob, but there are however quite a few very dark beers – ranging from the excellent Monkeytown Mild to the rich Phoenix Porter. A notable success has been Black Bee, a honey porter initially brewed as a one-off but now another regular.

The Mayflower as many may know was the boat that sailed the 100 Pilgrim Fathers to the New World (America) in 1620. On board the Mayflower acting as Military Captain was Captain Myles Standish who had strong links with the village and was of the of Standish family.

Fast forward in time (and back to beer) in December 2000 Stewart Thompson who, after reaching the age of 50 and having worked in various managerial roles in a number of breweries, decided it was time to take a gamble and realise a dream by starting his own brewery. The brewery The Mayflower Brewery set sail from the old Bleachworks site in Standish – and the rest as they say is history.

Prospectors and competitors set up around the Wigan area over the next few years but The Mayflower Brewery sailed on to become (according to folk law) – Wigan and Districts number one and most highly regarded brewery.

Mayflower produce an array of fine real ales such as – Wigan Bier, One of Mayflower’s original beers, brought up-to-date to celebrate our 10th birthday.
A refreshing golden ale with strong Goldings hop notes.
